Word Origin & Etymology
Named in 1877 by the Argentine explorer Francisco Moreno in honor of Robert FitzRoy, captain of the HMS Beagle, who had navigated the Patagonian coast decades earlier. Its indigenous Tehuelche name is Chaltén, meaning 'smoking mountain', due to the frequent clouds that shroud its summit.
